INSURER Aviva is to make a €10m fund available for people affected by Monday night's severe flooding.
The company said it had created the fund to ensure advance payments can be made to its customers to buy items lost during the flooding.
It revealed it has received over 1,000 claim-related calls in its Galway call centre since Monday. Some 70pc of the calls related to property while the rest were for damage to motor vehicles.
Aviva said: "Many people's homes and cars have been badly damaged and temporary accommodation or alternative forms of transport have had to be arranged at very short notice.
"In order to overcome any cash flow issues, Aviva is making advance payments to its affected customers so that they can purchase replacement household belongings and pay for temporary or rented accommodation. These payments will be offset against the outstanding claims when they are settled at a later date."
Spokeswoman Grainne Mackin added: "A lot of our customers have had very traumatic experiences and have lost a lot of their personal belongings or homes. By making advance payments we are attempting to reduce some of their concerns by ensuring that they have the necessary finances to get their lives back up and running as quickly as possible."
