Australia grants 10,000 Irish visas

MORE THAN 10,000 temporary residence visas were granted to Irish workers travelling to Australia, the majority of whom are skilled workers.

Edwina Shanahan, migration specialist with www.visafirst.com dismissed Prime Minister Julia Gillard's claim that the 456 temporary visas were being used to hire non-skilled workers.

"There are grumblings among some employer bodies and government representatives that some employers are hiring non-skilled non-national workers for jobs that could be done by local people," she said.

"However, when looked at more closely, it emerges that non-nationals fill jobs that a lot of Australians do not want to do."
