Arrest in €100k dole fraud case
Gardai have arrested a man who has been allegedly involved in a €100,000 social welfare fraud scam.
The suspect, who is a Romanian national, was still being quizzed by detectives in Balbriggan Garda Station last night after his arrest shortly after 8am yesterday.
A large number of gardai raided the man's house and arrested the suspect after a long-running investigation by the Department of Social Protection into dole fraud.
It is understood that the investigation is into the claiming of social welfare by a suspect who is claiming the dole under multiple false names.
Sources revealed that gardai seized a number of false identity documents and other material during the raid and the investigation into the alleged activities of the suspect is at an advanced stage.
The target of the operation is understood to have been living in Ireland with his family for a number of years and is known to gardai.
In December, it emerged that 20 gardai are now working for the Department of Social Protection's Special Investigation Unit, which has received much recent praise for its proactive approach.
The primary function of the gardai assigned is to look at allegations of social welfare fraud and initiate investigations where necessary.
