A man appeared in court last night charged with the murder of Stephen 'Apples' Kavanagh in Arklow, Co Wicklow.
Darren Houlden (42), of The Crescent, Meadow Vale, Arklow, arrived at Bray District Court shortly after 5pm in a dark red hoodie and grey tracksuit bottoms.
He was led into the back entrance of the courthouse by a number of gardai while covering his face.
The court heard that Mr Houlden is charged with murder, which is alleged to have taken place at a property in Arklow in the early hours of Monday, May 6.
Detective Garda Liam Flynn told Mr Justice David Kennedy that the accused made no reply when he was charged with the offences at Arklow Garda Station at 2.45pm yesterday.
Solicitor Padraig Hyland said there would be no application for bail given the nature of the charges before the court.
A request for the disclosure of interviews was made, but the judge questioned if this was "a bit premature".
However, Mr Hyland said he was entitled to make this application.
An application for legal aid was also made. Both applications were granted.
Mr Houlden was remanded in custody to appear again at Clover Hill District Court on May 14.
The 42-year-old was then escorted out of the court.
