Ambulance theft accused now faces drink-drive charge

THE woman accused of stealing an ambulance while it was out on an emergency call has now been charged with drunk driving during the incident.

Jessica Kavanagh (27), a community scheme worker, was remanded on continuing bail after new charges were brought before her at Dublin District Court today.

Kavanagh, with an address at Sean O'Casey Avenue, faces three charges following the incident in which an ambulance was allegedly taken while medics were attending a call to an elderly patient in January.

The accused had already been charged with the unauthorised taking of a vehicle.

The court heard today she has now been charged with drunk and uninsured driving in the incident at Rory O'Connor House on Hardwicke Street in the north inner city.

Judge Bryan Smyth accepted jurisdiction to deal with the case at District Court level after hearing an outline of the allegations against Kavanagh.

Garda Joseph O'Connor told the court the DPP had directed summary trial of the case in the District Court.

Outlining the allegations, he said a Dublin Fire Brigade ambulance was taken from outside Rory O'Connor House while two emergency crew were dealing with an elderly woman.

A call was dispatched and Garda O'Connor was in a patrol van when he saw the ambulance driving towards Sean O'Casey Avenue. He alleged that he saw the defendant leaving the driver's side of the ambulance before pursuing her and arresting her at the scene.

He then gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution on the two new charges.

He told the court he charged the accused and she made no reply after caution. All three charges are under the Road Traffic Act.

Judge Smyth extended bail on existing terms to the new charges.

Garda O'Connor sought an adjournment to give the prosecution time to disclose statements to the defence.

The defendant's solicitor Grainne Whelan consented to her being remanded on continuing bail.
