A year on... and FG has let us down
The Fine Gael/Labour coalition is coming up to the first anniversary of its dramatic sweep into power. How satisfying it was, back then, for us to have booted Brian Cowen and Co out of power.
What high hopes we had of a fresh start and a renewed energy for this country.
And how long ago it all seems now.
It is disappointing, to say the least, that no fewer than six ministers saw fit to breach pay guidelines for their advisers.
The extra remuneration in some cases isn't huge -- it's a few thousand euro a year above the maximum point on the pay scale to which advisers' pay is pegged.
But that's not the point.
We handed Fine Gael and Labour a resounding victory because we thought they were everything that Fianna Fail was not.
Did we get it so wrong?
