€8bn account surplus

IRELAND recorded a current account surplus of almost €8.09bn last year – four times higher than in 2011.

The Central Statistics Office said the balance in the last quarter of 2012 had also jumped by over €1bn, reaching €2.85bn.

Overall direct investment abroad saw a €3.81bn increase in the fourth quarter of 2012. However, direct investment in Ireland fell by €334m, the CSO said.
