The hunt is on for a lucky punter who scooped a massive €5.4m Lotto jackpot win over the weekend.

The National Lottery said that the Quick Pick ticket was purchased on Friday at Dublin Airport.

The ticket was sold at the WH Smith shop in the arrivals hall of Terminal 1, sparking rumours Ireland's newest millionaire is someone who was returning home for Christmas.

The numbers drawn in Saturday night's Lotto draw were 5, 14, 28, 29, 32, 38 and the bonus number was 31.

If there wasn't already an excuse given the time of year, champagne corks will be popping for the winner of the €5,436,602 prize.

However, the winner will have to sit pretty for a few days as the Lotto HQ on Abbey Street in the city centre reopens on December 28.

"This was one of the busiest days of the year in arrivals and the ticket could have been brought by somebody coming home for Christmas, by a friend or relative meeting a loved one, or an airport worker," National Lottery chief executive Dermot Griffin said.

"This is going to be a very special Christmas indeed for that lucky person."

The next Lotto draw is tomorrow when the jackpot will be €2m. A special Christmas Millionaire Raffle draw will also take place on New Year's Eve, with a guaranteed top prize of €1m.

"We are also delighted to be ending the year with our 12th Lotto jackpot winner of 2017," added Mr Griffin.
