€50m retail expansion plans to net 500 new jobs

Construction work on a €50m expansion of outlet shopping centre Kildare Village has begun.

Building work on the project will create 120 construction jobs, and the expansion of the centre will create 380 jobs.

The expansion is set to add 36 new boutiques to Kildare Village, bringing the total number in the outlet to 100.

The expanded outlet is scheduled to open in November of next year.

The centre, located on the outskirts of Kildare Town, opened in 2006 and was visited over 2.3 million times last year.

Brands including Calvin Klein, Hugo Boss, Levi and Nike have a presence there.

"The €50m investment and commitment by Value Retail (Kildare Village's developer and operator) is a testament to the existing success of the village, increasing visitation from our global tourism markets and the arrival of new international brands that continue to refresh the retail offer and appeal of Kildare Village," Kildare Village director Maria McGovern said.

"Kildare Village is expanding to accommodate demand and to maximise its potential as the leading shopping tourism destination in Ireland, in collaboration with our many tourism partners."

The expansion will add an additional 5,544 square metres, increasing its total size to 16,570 square metres.

It includes plans for two restaurants and a visitor centre with enhanced hospitality services. Value Retail also operates outlet centres in, amongst other cities, London, Paris and Milan.
