500 new patrol cars needed, not just 40
GARDAI have been allocated just 40 new squad cars despite a figure of around 500 new vehicles being required, the Herald can reveal.
Senior officers were told last week that just 40 new cars will be made available which is less than one tenth of what is required, according to senior sources.
The development comes after it emerged that a quarter of marked garda patrol cars have more than 250,000km on the clock, just 50,000km short of the safety limit.
The prevalence of older cars is greater in some garda divisions, with more than 40pc of vehicles in Clare, North Cork and Laois/Offaly having done more than 250,000km.
A total of 71 marked patrol cars were withdrawn in the last six months of 2011 -- after reaching the 300,000km limit -- and just 40 new cars have now been purchased to replace them.
In December, the Herald revealed that there is only one armed patrol car to provide armed back-up for the entire capital after 2am every night.
