The winner of a €5.8m Lotto jackpot remains a mystery and has yet to make contact with the National lottery to claim their life-changing prize.

Speculation was rife over the weekend that a syndicate from a Dublin Garda station were the country's newest millionaires after unconfirmed reports they had struck gold while on a Christmas party in Limerick.

Phone lines for the winner or winners to claim the prize opened yesterday morning but they closed at 5.30pm without the jackpot being claimed.

The winning ticket, a €5 Quickpick, was bought in the General Post Office on Cecil St, Limerick on Saturday. The winning numbers were 4, 16, 18, 24, 32, 35 and the bonus was 6.

Yesterday, representatives from the National Lottery visited the GPO in Limerick where they celebrated the jackpot win with staff. Delighted workers, including manager Roger McMahon, posed for cameras and opened a bottle of champagne to celebrate the post office selling the winning ticket.

Chief executive of the National Lottery, David Griffin said: "We're advising all of our Limerick Lotto players to check their tickets to find out if they have won this life-changing prize.

"If you are the lucky ticket holder or holders, sign the back of the ticket and contact the National Lottery Prize Claims Team on 01 836 4444."

A spokesman for the National Lottery quipped: "Whoever wins it will have enough for a decent Christmas anyway."

Meanwhile, Lotto chiefs have also urged another millionaire to come forward and collect their €1m winnings from Friday's Ireland Only Raffle.

The winning code found on that ticket was I-CWQ-43032 and was sold in a SuperValu store at Kilbarry Centre, Tramore Road, Co Waterford.

The win is the second time a winning Lotto jackpot ticket has been won in Limerick this year.

A lucky winner took home almost €3m in September after buying the ticket at Coughlan's Gala store on Quinlan Street.

At the time the manager of the store said that "speculation was rife", and since then the lucky winner has made contact with the National Lottery.
