€42k train graffiti charge

A BUDDING artist accused of causing €42,500 worth of spray-paint damage to trains, buses and Luas trams in Dublin was "addicted to the buzz" of graffiti.

Two south Dublin youths have been charged at the Dublin Children's Court with a litany of criminal damage charges arising out of alleged acts of graffiti from September last year until January 2012.

Charlie Magaharan (18), of Monalea Park, Firhouse faces 18 criminal damage charges and co-accused Jamie Johnson (19), of Priory Walk, Terenure, also in south Dublin faces 23 counts for the same offence.

Magaharan's solicitor John Bermingham asked the judge to note that the teen had "an addiction to graffiti, the thrill of the chase". Judge Coughlan held that Magaharan and his co-defendant should face trial in the Circuit Court.



¤900k for blind woman

A 65-YEAR-old Vietnamese woman left blind in one eye after she was hit by a bus has settled her High Court action for €900,000.

Cam My Lam, a married woman from Delhurst Lane, Ongar Park, Clonsilla, Dublin, was walking in St Stephen's Green in Dublin on January 13, 2009, when she was hit by a bus, knocked unconscious and suffered a head injury.



Ex-Fifa boss sends in troops

Former Fifa vice-president Jack Warner has called in troops and riot police to remove a protest camp built by environmentalists in his first move as Trinidad and Tobago's national security minister.

Dozens of soldiers and police razed the three-month-old camp built to protest against the construction of a road critics say will damage a watershed.



Race slur 'led to shooting'

The lawyer for a federal agent charged in the shooting death of a Hawaii man in a McDonald's claims the victim used racial slurs.

In papers seeking to move the case to US federal court, Christopher Deedy's lawyer said the agent intervened when shooting victim Kollin Elderts harassed a customer with racial slurs.

The defence alleges Elderts called the agent a "haole", the Hawaiian term for white person.
