4 years' jail for 110kph driver

A DUBLIN man who mounted a footpath during a high-speed car chase and forced a woman to jump out of the way has been jailed for four years.

John Doran (28) sped away from gardai through crowded city streets, clocking up 110kph in Rathgar village, narrowly missing pedestrian Louise Twomey on November 11, 2012.

Doran, of Sandyford Road, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to endangerment. A charge of dangerous driving was also taken into consideration.

The father-of-four was under two suspended sentences and these have since been re-activated.

Judge Martin Nolan ruled the latest term must run consecutively. He also imposed a four-year driving ban.

RUSSIAN CRASH WAS 'PILOT ERROR'

Pilot error caused the Russian airliner crash which killed 50 people in Kazan, investigators have said.

The country's aviation watchdog said the Boeing 737 pilots let the plane become too slow at a low altitude, resulting in a diving crash that killed all on board.

It added the crew failed to make a proper approach on their first landing attempt and then began a second run but hit the ground at a near-vertical angle.

POLICE have said the mother of two abandoned babies found on either side of the German-Dutch border has been identified through DNA tests as a German woman.

Numerous tip-offs led officers to the 25-year-old woman living near Cologne who admitted abandoning her newborn boy in the Dutch city of Roermond in June, and her little girl two years earlier in Huerth near Cologne.

Both children are now in foster care.
