Speculation is rife in Drogheda as to who the country’s latest millionaire is after a jackpot winning lottery ticket was sold in a Tesco store on Friday.

The €2m Saturday winner, a €4 Quick Pick, was sold in the Tesco Extra store on Donore Road, just off the M1 motorway.

Staff hope that the winner is a local, but the store’s location hints that the winner could be in any part of the country.

Personnel manager Jacinta Tuite was delighted with the news and called her husband to check if it was their ticket, only to find he had bought one in a different shop.

“It’s fantastic news, it’s absolutely brilliant. There’s a great buzz around the place and it’s given everyone a lift. Everyone is checking their tickets,” said Ms Tuite.

“Customers are saying they’d better go home to check their tickets. Hopefully it’s someone from around the area, but we’ll have to wait and see.”

It is the second big jackpot to come from a Tesco store in recent weeks, after a syndicate picked up €5.9m from Tesco Mullingar last month.

Tesco Ireland spokesperson Aoife Donoghue said it’s a lucky time for the supermarket chain.

“We’re having a good run of fortune at the moment, with this one coming so soon after the winner in Mullingar,” she said.

However, the winner may have been lucky to have got hold of their ticket, following a minor service interruption on lottery machines on Friday that affected many stores nationwide.
