16 suspects held after garda drug gang swoop

SIXTEEN people suspected to have been involved in a major drugs-dealing network have been arrested by gardai.

Officers in Limerick are expected to make further arrests this weekend as part of a major crackdown on drug-dealing across the Mid-West region.

An investigation named Operation Kelso culminated this weekend following a six- month covert operation where gardai targeted both low-level dealers and senior suppliers.

Dealers targeted have been monitored for a lengthy period and involved in the sale and supply of heroin, cocaine and crack cocaine in Limerick.

Of the 12 men and four women arrested, at least 13 were brought before Limerick District Court yesterday. Most of yesterday's raids occurred in Limerick city but three men were also detained in Newcastle West, Co Limerick.

Cocaine with an estimated street value of €2,000 was also seized. The ongoing operation is being led by the Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit headed up by Det Sgt Alan Cullen supported by the National Drugs Unit.
