10,000 Irish sex site users have private info hacked
Thousands of Irish people are expected to have had their private information exposed in a cyber-attack on meet-up website AdultFriendFinder.com.
The website's parent company, Friend Finder Networks, was hacked and the passwords and email addresses of 412m accounts were leaked in one of the largest ever data breaches.
The attack took place in October, with browser information, IP addresses and site membership status also released in the breach.
The site, which describes itself as "the world's largest sex and swinger community" is said to have accounted for 339.7m of the accounts exposed.
It is understood there are more than 10,000 users of the raunchy site based in Ireland and have had their emails and passwords exposed.
Several million accounts from the company's other sites were also victims to the hack. Some 62m customer accounts from Cams.com and 7m from Penthouse.com and several more from a number of smaller websites were also exposed.
It is not the first time Friend Finder Networks has been the victim of such an attack. The company, which has offices in Florida, London and Taiwan, was also targeted last year.
The business has been criticised for its security measures since the second attack. However, a spokeswoman claimed they have identified the vulnerability and rectified it.
"Over the past several weeks, FriendFinder has received a number of reports regarding potential security vulnerabilities from a variety of sources," said Diana Ballou, vice president and senior counsel.
"Immediately upon learning this information, we took several steps to review the situation and bring in the right external partners to support our investigation.
"We did identify and fix a vulnerability related to the ability to access source code through an injection vulnerability," she told ZDNet.com.
The company is not the first dating website to be hacked. Ashley Madison, which helps married people have affairs, last year suffered an attack that saw details of 37m users published.
