Galway's gastro getaway is to die for
Galway has always prided itself as being a city of heritage and culinary delights, so it's fitting that its finest hotel, the g Hotel, has just launched the ultimate gastro getaway.
The g Hotel gastronomic getaway, Thursday March 3 and Friday, March 4, is a fine excuse for foodies to sample an epicurean menu in the award-winning restaurant, as well as getting a professional cookery lesson.
Located on the edge of Galway city, the g may not look like much from the outside, but inside it's a different story. The reception area is understated glamour, but the lounges are an explosion of colour, with the salons, Pink, Blue and Grand, aptly named.
The 101 bedrooms are luxury defined, with spacious, grandiose accommodation. Beds are huge and extremely comfortable, while there's plenty of space to unwind, with flat-screen TVs and large wardrobes as standard.
However, the g Hotel soars with the culinary expertise of its staff. Under executive head chef Stefan Matz, the Matz at the g is hailed as one of the best eateries in the west and that reputation is well deserved on the evidence of the meal that makes up the centrepiece of the weekend.
Consisting of five courses with wine, the dinner -- including fish from the Connemara Smokehouse and air-dried meats from McGeough's butchers -- is adventurous and delicious. Smoked hot and cold tuna and abalone with a barley risotto was a highlight and the rack of lamb was among the best I've ever eaten.
Those attending the culinary weekend can mix with the chefs, as the second day sees cookery tuition for those interested. There's also a tour around the city itself visiting local producers.
The two-night package starts at €225 per person sharing for the weekend. > Garreth Murphy
