Top 5 shopping experiences
CENTURY 21: it's manic, the sales staff can be gruff, and it's all a bit overwhelming, but the bargains are great. Situated beside Ground Zero, there's a huge separate shoe store, and a promise of up to 65pc off brand names. If you fancy shopping with a view, take the stroll down to the wonderful South Street Seaport for great photo ops of Brooklyn Bridge. www.c21stores.com
CONWAY: New York's equivalent of our own Guiney's, it's a great place to pick up cheap T-shirts, shirts, jeans and luggage (could come in handy). Two useful locations on West 34 St and also 7th Avenue. www.conwaystores.com
GABAY'S OUTLET: Overstock from department stores ends up here in the heart of Manhattan's East Village. Up to 80pc off high-end names like Fendi and Dior. www.gabaysoutlet.com
JERSEY GARDENS: A survey this week shows prices around 33pc lower in the Big Apple than back home. And they're even cheaper in neighbouring New Jersey. Big names likes Gap and American Eagle in a Liffey Valley-type mall. Check www.jerseygardens.com for handy bus from Manhattan, or Newark Airport.
WOODBURY COMMON: My least favourite: a 45-minute trek out of the city to an outlet mall, which isn't as quiet or nice as those in other states. But the bargains are certainly there, and it's incredibly popular with the Irish. Check out wwww.premiumoutlets.com
