This year autumn has kept winter in its corner. The sky has been lit in the last weeks with gold and red, as marvellous trees continue to resist the vice-like grip of the old enemy.

How the poet Patrick Kavanagh would have enjoyed this dazzling display.

As a boy, the departing beauty of the season saddened him. But one day overwhelmed by the light, he knew it was "over all my life".

In autumn, he could communicate best with the forces of nature which drove his poetic output.
