A beautiful bedroom without the comedy

Have you ever found yourself in a homeware department wondering how they manage to create such inviting spaces that, if it wasn't for the fact that you were in public, you'd climb between the Egyptian cotton sheets with the duck-down duvet on top and take that well-deserved nap?

Well, in order to save you that possible future embarrassment, here are a few tips on how to get the boudoir of your dreams . . .

1 Clutter free They say cleansing is good for the soul, so get into recycling mode and start getting rid of anything you know in your heart ain't ever going to see the light of day again. Leave nostalgia at the door, otherwise you will just move it from one corner to another and nothing will have been gained -- or lost in this case.

2 Space savvy When buying a bed think about access to the area beneath it. Either one with legs that keeps it off the ground allowing you to store things under it, or one that comes with drawers which can hide a multitude.

3 BOX CLEVER If you're looking for a built-in wardrobe, then remember, it's not all about the external aesthetics of the unit. Incorporate space for shoe racks, hooks on the insides of the doors for ties and the like. Take advantage of full floor to ceiling height by building in a mechanism to lower a clothes rail that would otherwise be out of reach.

4 Window dressing Curtains, I find, tend to clutter, while blinds, such as Roman or Venetian, give the illusion of space. If you're using strong colours and designs on your windows, you need to tone it down in the remainder of the room.

5 Accessories Throws and cushions can really tie the design within a room together. Add candles for a romantic touch. And choosing a low lighting option for occasional lights will give a calming atmosphere.

All in all, your bedroom is your haven, your space away from the strains and stresses of life as it were. So, design it and enhance it in such a way that just walking into it will be like slipping into a long, hot bath at the end of a nightmare day.
