Tried & tested: Lip balm

WHEN out with a couple of friendsrecently, the talk turned to lip balm.

We all started passing around our balms after we ate, like a strange version of afterdinner brandies. What followed was an indepth discussion of the balms currently in service. Between us, we had 17 lip-care items at our disposal.

If you are of the same persuasion, it looks like we have the makings of a support group.

NUXE Lip Balm with Honey and Precious Oils, €12.50 * * * *

Oh, Nuxe, your honey and precious oils are glorious and the loss of a star is probably due to the glass pot in which you are contained, which is annoying to have to bring around in one’s handbag! This is a keeper, despite its excess packaging.

LIZ EARLE SUPER BALM, €5.25 (5G) * *

This is small and light, and just begs to be slipped into one’s pocket. It feels good, smells good, and was super easy-peasy to apply, even though it was a wee pot, but it made my lips feel dry after it absorbed. Apparently, one can use this everywhere on one’s body - maybe this is trying to do too much?

AROMATHERAPY ASSOCIATES Moisturising Lip Balm, €15 * * *

The perfectsized pot to go in a pocket! And it is quite soft and silky, and transfers itself to one’s fingertip without gouging. But it fades away too quickly, and I didn’t feel it did the job fully. If you’re a compulsive reapplier, then check this one out.

DERMALOGICA Renewal Lip Complex, €30.75, * * * * *

This is the ace of diamonds in the high-stakes game of lip care. One teenytiny turn of the dial on the bottom dispenses the perfect amount of product through the applicator. Everything about this is fantastic, so much so that this is my ‘special occasions’ lip balm. Every girl should have one.

AVENE Cold Cream Lip Balm, €8 * * * *

First thought, in all honesty was: ‘Cold cream on my mouth? Ick!’ I would have missed out on something really good had I failed to try this. It goes on soft, and yes, cool, but it doesn’t feel creamy in a bad way, only in a good way. Needs more touching up than most, but still excellent.

JO MALONE Vitamin E Lip Conditioner, €28 * * * *

I’m taking a star off because, in fairness, the vitamin E aspect of Jo’s offering is not terribly tasty. Otherwise, this is pretty darn awesome: the lightest application lasts a long time, and the softness it imparts is terrific.
