Top nail care for the digital era
It's not that hard to take good care of your nails. I make it difficult for myself because I simply never remember to give myself the treatments.
The culprits, as far as my mitts are concerned, are the cuticles. And ridges on my nails. And weakness in general. I have had these products arrayed around my laptop for ages and I am finally ready to report.
SALLY HANSEN Gel Cuticle Remover, €7.25 HHHII
In theory, this is everything I've ever wanted in a cuticle treatment, which is a thing that you apply in a line directly on the excess skin. In practice, it doesn't come out of the tube smoothly and despite using an orange stick to distribute it evenly, the result was less effective than I had hoped.
ESSIE Fill the Gap! Ridge Smoothing Base Coat, €10.69 HHHHI
This worked rather well: two coats and it looked like my nails looked beautifully smooth. It didn't last very long, which is a bummer, but is only to be expected. I can't fault it for that, because maintenance is totally on me, so I do recommend this.
LUSH Lemony Flutter Cuticle Butter, €9.95 HHHII
This makes me want to lick my fingers -- it smells so good, just like cupcake icing! I found it to be a tiny bit too slow in absorption, though, which made it even more difficult to find a good time to apply this. People who are able to sit still for more than a minute might get benefit from this.
MAVALA Cuticle Oil, €13 HHHHI
This is great. I brush it on, and my cuticles immediately begin to feel the benefit. Prepare yourself for the peeling away of excess skin, which is a little unattractive, but the peeling means the oil is doing its job. A bit slow on the absorption, but the brush means clean application.
OPI Nail Envy: Soft & Thin Nail Strengthener, €22.95 HHHII I thought this was fine, but not amazing. The first application was terrific, but the top ups, which were suggested every other day, merely seemed to be piling layers on, rather than sinking in and helping my nails. However, I feel optimistic about this and will keep trying.
