The €600 clogs kicking back at our recessionary shopping habits
The hotly anticipated €600 wooden clogs by Chanel, this season's most unlikely trend, have sold out here -- before they have even hit the shelves.
Irish shoe-lovers have proven that the recession hasn't hit all sections of society and are signing up for the celebrity shoes in droves.
Fashionistas have put all pairs of the coveted brown leather version, worn by MTV star Alexa Chung on the cover of this month's Vogue, on hold by joining an extensive waiting list long before the arrival of the skyscraper clogs instore this week.
The upmarket French fashion house kicked off the return of the revamped clunky footwear as a 'lust-have' trend after designer Karl Lagerfeld debuted his extremely high versions during Chanel's spring/summer catwalk show in Paris last October.
The humble heels, of which numerous affordable lookalikes are already available, are finally set to hit shelves here in a matter of days -- but the waiting list filled up so fast that the most popular versions are said to be sold out before they have even arrived.
A spokesperson for the Chanel boutique, in Brown Thomas, told the Herald: "We don't have them in just yet but they will be coming here any time now, probably in a matter of days.
"There is already a very long waiting list as the clogs are very much in demand in Dublin," she added.
"There are different colours, fabrics and heel heights; a very high version and a less high version, which will be easier to walk in. All of the styles will be available, and if they are not in stock it will be possible to transfer stock from another store," she said.
Chanel was unable to confirm price points for the shoes but the line is expected to cost upwards of €600 based on British prices.
'It girl' of the moment Alexa Chung has become the firm face of the trend and has been spotted wearing them regularly.
The high-fashion clogs have also been spotted on Ashley Olsen and former OC star Rachel Bilson, who have all caught on to the current love of everything 1970s.
Meanwhile high street wedge, platform and high heels clogs are already available in Topshop, Office, River Island -- and Penneys' affordable €23 clogs will be in stores here at the end of June.
