Make-up

>OVERALL MAKE-UP RANGE

? RIMMEL, FROM €4.53

Almost ridiculously cheap, the Rimmel brand keeps getting better and better. The products give more expensive brands a run for their money with top-class polishes, foundations, mascara and glosses.

>BEST COMPACT FOUNDATION

? CHANEL MAT LUMIÈRE, €47.50

Beautifully packaged, this velvety compact mattifies shiny areas and gives great coverage. You can apply it dry for a semi-matte finish or with a damp sponge for a longer-lasting finish.

>BEST FOUNDATION FOR OILY/ COMBO SKIN

? CLARINS EVERLASTING FOUNDATION, €29

A long-lasting foundation that claims 15 hours coverage. While that may be overstating things a bit, it really is long-lasting and gives a great finish. It also protects against free radicals and UV rays.

>BEST FOUNDATION FOR DRY/COMBO SKIN

? BOURJOIS HEALTHY MIX FOUNDATION, ¤14.99

This light, fluid foundation has a great texture and gives surprisingly good coverage. It’s full of natural ingredients to benefit skin too: apple, peach and raspberry to moisturise and boost circulation.

>BEST LOOSE POWDER

? SHISEIDO TRANSLUCENT LOOSE POWDER, €38

Superfine and light-as-air this powder gives a great finish to make-up, giving almost an airbrushed result. Generously sized with a great powder puff, this will last a while.

>BEST UNDER-EYE CONCEALER

? OLAY TOTAL EFFECTS TOUCH OF CONCEALER, €22.99

A light liquid concealer, the light-reflecting properties sort out dark shadows straight away. A little goes a long way too, making it a very savvy purchase.

>BEST SKIN TINT/TINTED MOISTURISER

? PERRICONE MD NO FOUNDATION FOUNDATION, €50

More than a mere tinted moisturiser, this is a skin treatment. Light reflecting magic gives the appearance of near-flawless skin, even though it looks like you’re not wearing any product.

>BEST FULL COVERAGE FOUNDATION

? La Roche-Posay Toleriane Corrective Fluid foundation ¤18

A brilliant choice for sensitive skin or rosacea, this fullcover foundation masks high colouring and imperfections without looking remotely heavy.

>BEST POWDER BLUSH

? NARS POWDER BLUSH, €29

A soft, sheer blush that can be worn alone for a sheer glow or built up for more depth. The famous ‘orgasm’ is the perfect peachy-pink shade that suits most complexions; the subtle gold shimmer acts as a nice highlighter.

>BEST CREAM BLUSH

? ILLAMASQUA CREAM BLUSH, €20

A little goes a long way with these high-pigment cream blushes from make-up artist favourite, Illamasqua. Available in a beautiful range of shades, it has good staying power.

>BEST CONCEALER

? LAURA MERCIER SECRET CAMOUFLAGE, €38

The two shades allow for custom-blending so you get the perfect match for your skin. Its powers are amazing: dark shadows disappear, redness and blemishes are effortlessly masked without a cakey finish.

>BEST BRONZER

? ISADORA BRONZER, €25.95

This massive disc of bronzer is ideal for allover use. The shades aren’t too orangey and work well on pale skin tones, and the shimmer is nice and subtle. A great price, too.

Hidden tricks

‘Always apply concealer before foundation to lift dark areas and disguise imperfections. Apply with your ring finger for the lightest touch. Apply concealer under the eyes, nose and over areas you feel need perfecting in a patting instead of sweeping action.’

CAROLINE BARNES MAKE-UP ARTIST

>BEST DAY MASCARA

* MAX FACTOR FALSE LASH EFFECT MASCARA, €14.99

The massive brush makes all the difference with this mascara. It catches every lash while the mascara coats them. Lashes look thicker and longer and there’s no ‘panda eyes’ effect.

>BEST FOR ETHNIC SKIN TONES

* BECCA, FROM €42

This Australian brand was created around the idea of great skin and has a fantastic range of foundation and concealer shades, from the very palest shades to the darkest tones.

>BEST LIQUID EYELINER

* RIMMEL GLAM’EYES LIQUID LINER, €6.92

A brilliant liner that’s easy to apply (thanks to the pen-like tip) and doesn’t budge once it’s on. It’s possible to get the finest line if you have a steady hand.

>BEST BUDGET LIP GLOSS

* RIMMEL VINYL GLOSS, €6.52

A gloss worthy of a more substantial price tag. Smooth, not sticky and with loads of shades on offer, it was the winner by a long shot. Perfect for experimenting with fashion shades you don’t really want to spend loads on.

>BEST BUDGET MASCARA

* RIMMEL 1-2-3-LOOKS, €9.91

Another gem from the Rimmel stable. This one gets the nod because you can choose the effect you want to achieve; click one, two, three times to adjust the amount of product that goes on the brush, and your lashes.

>BEST LUXURY MASCARA

* GUERLAIN LE 2 DE GUERLAIN, €33.86

A beautiful mascara in elegant packaging. There are two brushes; a regular one and at the other end of the tube a miniature brush designed for smaller lashes. It’s angled so it reaches the tiny lashes at inner and outer corners while the formulation is fluid and covers lashes in a sweep.

>BEST POWDER EYESHADOW

* SHISEIDO LUMINIZING SATIN EYE COLOURS €25

Beautiful shadows that offer great colour payoff; what you see in the compact is what you get on lids. The long-lasting formula means they stay for hours and there are lots of shades.

>BEST CREAM EYESHADOW

* BARE MINERALS HIGH SHINE EYE COLORS, €17

These shadow tubes combine rich mineral pigment with metallic pearls. The creamy powders give an amazing finish, like molten metal, and stay put for hours.

>BEST PRODUCT FOR BROWS

* BENEFIT BROWS A-GO-GO, €39.50

A great little kit offering everything you need to get brows in perfect condition. You have to love the Benefit packaging, too.

>BEST LUXURY LIPSTICK RANGE

* GUERLAIN ROUGE G, €38.84

The packaging, designed by Lorenz Bäumer, a jeweller from the Place Vendôme in Paris, is gorgeous but the lipstick itself is worthy of the award. It just glides on, and gives great colour.

>BEST LONG-LAST LIP COLOUR

* MAX FACTOR LIPFINITY, €14.49

This has been around for ages and is still going strong. Lipfinity provides long-lasting colour with a glossy top coat. Apparently there’s one sold somewhere in the world every nine seconds.

>BEST LIP PENCIL

* CHANEL CRAYONS LEVRES, €20

Wonderfully soft and smooth to apply, Chanel’s lip pencils have great staying power and come in a host of shades, from the most natural beige to boldest red. The built-in lip brush and accompanying sharpener are a bonus.

>BEST BUDGET LIPSTICK RANGE

* BOURJOIS SWEET KISS €11.99

A lovely range of well-priced lipsticks. Argan oil provides great moisturising properties while the satin finish has good staying power. Nice packaging, too.

>BEST LUXURY LIP GLOSS

* NARS LIP GLOSS, €25

Available in a great range of shades and in sheer, creamy and semi-sheer formulas, NARS glosses are supershiny and highly pigmented. The sleek packaging is hard to resist, too.

>BEST HIGHLIGHTER

* NARS THE MULTIPLE, €41

A celeb favourite, The Multiple is as multi-use as the name suggests; use it over or under foundation to add a glow or on cheekbones and lids. Lots of shades available, too.

>BEST EYE PENCIL

* REVLON COLORSTAY €8.50

Wonderfully soft pencils that glide on without pulling skin. They’ve got great staying power and the waterproof formula means they don’t smear or smudge for hours.

>BEST EYE BASE

* BECCA EYE TINT, €25

These little tubes are eye colours in their own right (providing a sheer wash of colour) but also make great eyeshadow bases. Your shadows will stay put for hours when applied over one of these.
