The Behaviour and Attitudes research with 750 respondents also revealed that:
> 44pc said their hearing loss made it difficult to socialise in public places, with one in four (26pc) saying their hearing loss was affecting their home life.
> 28pc took more than five years to seek treatment.
> 65pc said the first sign of their hearing loss was asking people to repeat themselves, 57pc said it was turning up the television and radio volume.
> 51pc said hearing loss made them uncomfortable in groups.
> 52pc pretended to hear what people were saying. Research conducted with family and friends revealed that 59pc said the volume of the television was a contentious issue.
