Face to face with cleansers

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned how bad I am at using cleanser. It gets in my eyes, and then I knock everything off the sink because I'm fumbling for the towel, which I should have to hand for crying out loud. I also splash water all over the place.

It really doesn't feel worth it . . . and then I find a cleanser that does literally feel worth it, and I swear that I will work on my cleansing abilities.

One or two of the products below are making me stick to this resolution.

THE BODY SHOP Aloe Calming Facial Cleanser, €10.95, * * * *

This felt cool on impact, which is what one expects from anything that has aloe in it. It didn't make much headway with the make-up, but it was certainly a refreshing way to greet a new day. So, this cleanser is clearly a morning person. My pores felt the correct level of 'tight' after my skin dried.

BURT'S BEES Facial Cleanser, €14.95, * *

I found the scent of this to be so off-putting that I couldn't really bear to use it. It's got royal jelly in it, and I had to look that up. It's got to do with bee larvae and in a word: yuck. It all went downhill from there, and I don't feel like it did much for my complexion.

GARNIER Simply Essentials Comforting Cleansing Milk, €4.69, * * *

This cleanser is very comforting, which is an unusual adjective to apply to a beauty product. It claims to work even on waterproof make-up . . . which it didn't -- not really. It did shift the waterproof mascara somewhat, but I still ended up with smears of black around my eyes. I wiped those off with that Matis eye make-up remover I liked a few weeks ago. My skin felt silky, but it didn't really do what it said on the tin.

JO MALONE Eucalyptus and Mint Frothing Cleansing Cream, €49, * * *

Oh, what a scent! It is gorgeous! Do wash your face with this before you go to sleep, your dreams will be wonderfully scented by the eucalyptus and mint. Sadly, the cleanser doesn't really froth, and it doesn't do very well as regards cleaning off the macquillage. Great for a skin treat, but not your go-to girl for every day.

ARTISTRY Time Defiance Cleansing Treatment, €33.30, * * * * *

The winner this week and the indisputable champion. A bit of an auld squeeze turns into a copious lather and off goes the make-up, everything wiped away as if by magic, even the nasty black eye-liner. The added bonus is that my skin was left feeling supple. The rest of my regime (toner, night cream) didn't know what hit it -- in a good way.
