Diet drinks don't work says doctor

DIETERS depending on low- calorie slimming drinks are doomed to failure, a leading obesity expert has warned.

Donal O'Shea, (below) who runs the weight-management clinic at St Columcille's Hospital in Loughlinstown, says over- the-counter, low-calorie, meal replacements drinks do not work "for 95pc of people".

"If we have learned anything over the last decade in weight management it is that, for most people, slow weight loss is the only way to lose weight successfully and keep it off.

"I cannot say it enough, quick fixes do not work.

"My message to the public is to understand that there is no such thing as a shortcut to weight loss. Weight loss takes time and the real key to success is to understand and accept this fact."

The Irish Pharmacy Union, however, disagrees with Dr O'Shea and says that with the proper guidance and advice meal-replacements can work.
