Ireland's best-loved alien duo Zig and Zag are celebrating their 21st anniversary this year with a TV special.

The furry pair were first introduced to an unsuspecting children's audience in September 1987 when dole queues were long and money was short.

Now, as another downturn creeps in, the aliens are returning to our screens on bank holiday Monday for a sentimental reunion.

Today FM presenters Ian Dempsey and Ray D'Arcy will both feature heavily in the look back on the different stages and the brightly coloured jumpers of the Den from its first inception as Dempsey's Den 21 years ago.

This anniversary show will look back at the best bits from the less than identical twins from the Planet Zog. A generation of kids grew up watching beige-coloured Zig and purple, spotty Zag bring chaos upon which ever host was unfortunate enough to be trying to keep order in between them.

Zig and Zag preceded all of the puppets on today's RTE children's schedules, such as Dustin the Turkey and Socky the Sock Monster, and proved popular with all ages from the tots to the college students.

Highlights

The 'Best Bitz from Back Den' will have all the highlights, including Ted's attacks and Christmas specials squeezed into a half-hour programme. It will also mark a brief return of Captain Joke, Captain Pillowcase and Cousin Nigel.

The Den was filmed live and put straight on air so there is a lack of footage from the time. However, Zig and Zag did bring out a video, Million Quid Vid, in 1995 and are expected to release their first DVD for the 21st anniversary.

The 'Best Bitz from Back Den' will be on RTE on October 27 at 6.30pm.
