Fans of TV thriller The Fall are in for a treat with a feature length finale to conclude season two.

BBC have promised a shock end to the second season of the show which follows Gillian Anderson – formerly of the X Files – on her pursuit of a Belfast serial killer.

“This series has such a wonderfully shocking conclusion that it’s only fitting viewers should be treated to a feature finale to relish,” Ben Stephenson of the BBC said.

Now that the police have identified the name of the killer, the net seems to be closing in on the murderous character played by Irish actor Jamie Dornan.

“It’s a real vote of confidence in the show and allows me the chance to explore the issues the drama deals with in real depth,” writer Alan Cubitt commented.

Irish viewers will be the first to see the 90-minute conclusion as it airs here on December 14 – four days before the BBC will show it in the UK. Anderson, who is also a producer on the show, has said that she expects a third season.

However, it remains unclear if Dornan will still be involved. The dad-of-one previously told reporters that “for story reasons” he couldn’t confirm if he would appear in the next series of the show.

His appearance, which he researched by watching tapes of Ted Bundy, has garnered him significant attention from Hollywood.

Tinsletown came calling for the 32-year-old with the lead role in the hugely anticipated blockbuster 50 Shades of Grey.

He will play billionaire Christian Grey in the film due to be released around Valentines day 2015. Trailers for the movie, which show the former model in various states of undress, have broken YouTube records for the most views of a clip.

He is also due to star in another book adaptation, the 9th Life of Louis Drax.

The actor first shot to fame as a Calvin Klein model and appeared in billboard campaigns with supermodel Kate Moss and actress Kiera Knightly.

The Fall has been the top-rated drama on BBC two since it first hit screens last year. It picked up an IFTA for the best drama at last year’s Irish Film and TV Awards.
