AMERICAN actor Josh Hartnett and his 19th Century beard were back on the streets of the capital as cameras rolled for the gothic horror hit Penny Dreadful.

Dublin Castle was transformed into Victorian era London complete with an old-fashioned carousel and a double- decker tram for the shoot of what appeared to be a market scene.

Stalls on the atmospheric set included vendors selling jellied eel pies and royal souvenirs.

Harnett (36), famous for his roles in the likes of Black Hawk Down and 30 Days of Night, was seen on set laughing with cast and crew.

Filming of Penny Dreadful's second series has been ongoing around Dublin over the last couple of motnhs.

Previous locations included Francis Street in the south inner city, Temple Bar, the Guinness Brewery and Marlay Park.

The cast of the Sky Atlantic production this year boasts Timothy Dalton, former Bond girl Eva Green and Billie Piper.

Series two will be bigger than the first, with bosses commissioning ten episodes for the forthcoming season after averaging 4.8 million weekly viewers.

Its been estimated that the economy benefited to the tune of €33m from the filming of the first season.
