Operation Transformation Dr Ciara defends Eilish ‘disgrace’ comments
An Operation Transformation doctor said that she stands by her harsh criticism of one of the contestants who she said had overindulged in alcohol.
Dr Ciara Kelly lashed out at mum-of-three Eilish Kavanagh (47) as an “abomination” and said she was “disgusted” to see her drinking a significant number of vodkas on the weight loss show.
“You are supposed to work hard every week,” Dr Kelly told Ms Kavanagh.
“This week was an abomination and I was embarrassed for you and I was disgusted to see you, you let the programme down.
“You let your followers down and with respect to Eilish, you let yourself down.”
The Wexford leader missed her target weight loss of 2lbs this week and the GP reminded her that alcohol was an extra “six or seven hundred calories”.
“There are young people watching this show, there are kids watching this show and I thought that was appalling,” Dr Kelly said.
“I might have expected it from one of our younger leaders but you are not one of our younger leaders.”
Ms Kavanagh said that she “made a mistake” on the night out with friends at Gowran park.
“I had a few drinks, I had a good day, that’s life,” she said.
Yesterday Dr Kelly defended her strong criticism of Ms Kavanagh.
“Being a GP, I see the cold face of it. People saying ‘What’s the problem? She’s only having a few drinks’ is an issue.
“It’s not about Eilish as a person, it is unacceptable behaviour in a setting that promotes being healthy and adopting healthier lifestyles.
“She (Eilish) just happened to be on the receiving end of my view,” she added in a newspaper interview.
“It’s not about her, it’s about us as a nation.”
