No Metro North ... but SpongeBob still catches the train to Ballymun

METRO North may have been derailed by the Government but that hasn't stopped SpongeBob SquarePants.

The cartoon character and his friends appear to have built their own train to Ballymun.

As our picture shows, the animated character can easily hop on an underground train to north Dublin -- unlike its residents.

The inclusion of Ballymun in the hit children's television programme comes courtesy of a Dublin-born animator.

Derek L'Estrange has revealed that he and other animators often include personal details in episodes of Nickelodeon show.

Originally from Sandyhill Gardens in Ballymun, the train was Derek's way of "giving a little shout-out to the northside".

The train was first spotted by an eagle-eyed viewer of the cartoon show, who contacted the Ray D'Arcy Show on Today FM.

The listener told how the train to Ballymun had appeared in an episode of the hit children's series called Yours, Mine And Mine. Patrick, one of the show's main characters, can be spotted boarding a train bound for Ballymun.
