Daithi's getting in shape for this year's Rose of Tralee final

TV presenter Daithi O Se has embarked on a strict training regime to prepare him for the demanding role as presenter of the Rose of Tralee.

The Kerryman has revealed to the Herald his plans to tone up before the festival in August, which will see him host the event for a second year.

Daithi (34) has begun a tough fitness programme of swimming, running and hiking. He and his girlfriend, former New Jersey Rose Rita Talty take part in outdoor activities together.

The American beauty is a good influence on him, he said.

"I'll be getting into proper training now for the next six or seven weeks before the contest begins," he said.

"I've started swimming in the sea to get in shape. I go a lot when I'm down in Galway.

"It's pretty cold but once you get in you get used to it. I've already managed to put my back out."

Daithi has just returned from a break in Spain with his other half and says the couple thoroughly enjoyed their time in the sun.

The couple are set to take off for the States later this week to visit Rita's family.

According to the RTE star: "We're just back from a break in the Med.

"We had a lovely time down in Spain for a few weeks. We're off to New Jersey to visit Rita's parents for a couple of weeks now so I'm looking forward to that.

"Once we get back it will be full swing into the Rose of Tralee and travelling the country with all the girls.

"I'm delighted to have been asked back, it was good craic last year and I'm looking forward to having a laugh with all the Roses again."

This weekend Daithi was in Portlaoise to present the regional selection nights on Saturday and Sunday evening at the Heritage Hotel.

Meanwhile, Daithi insists he is still in the dark when it comes to the new autumn schedule set to be announced around the same time.

He says he has heard nothing yet about whether or not RTE television series The All Ireland Talent Show will be recommissioned.

He has also yet to hear about his afternoon series, The Daily Show, which he presents with Claire Byrne.
