Aengus visited mum’s grave before he wed
WEDDINGS are guaranteed to be emotional but for RTE newscaster Aengus MacGrianna his was more so than most.
In the run-up to his big day, the 49-year old described how his thoughts returned to his mother Julie who passed away when he was just 11.
"Nothing was ever the same from that moment," he said.
"Today is all about the living but thoughts about my mum have been on my mind more than I thought they would. I know that she will be there with us in spirit today," he added.
Aengus's mother died of cancer a few months after being diagnosed when her son was not yet a teenager.
The day before the newsman married his long-term partner Terry Gill, he visited his mother's grave in Sutton Cemetery.
"We brought flowers from the garden with us," the Raheny native said.
Speaking to the RTE Guide, Aengus spoke about his pride in having former colleague and close friend Anne Doyle on hand to give him away at the humanist ceremony on June 22.
"She was there for me at major junctures in my life," he commented.
The pair pulled up to the venue in Ballymacgarvey village in a black Rolls-Royce holding hands and smiling widely while Gill was walked up the aisle by his mother Eva.
Several of MacGrianna's former 'Masterchef' competitors including Yvonne Keating, Tracy Piggott and Maia Dunphy were among the 150 guests.
The RTE newsroom was well represented also with Eileen Dunne, Michael Murphy, Kate Egan and Teresa Mannion in attendance.
The couple who live on an alpaca farm near Ashbourne met by chance in a Dublin pub The Front Lounge 10 years ago and instantly hit it off.
After returning from their honeymoon in Greece the pair will travel to the UK in the coming weeks to legally marry.
