2fm reject Nikki speaks about her heartache over axing

FORMER 2fm DJ Nikki Hayes (34) has spoken about her disappointment about being axed from the station.

She revealed that she was left devastated after the brief chat with radio bosses confirming that she was no longer on the RTE radio schedule.

"They told me on the Sunday night, after I had finished my last programme, and it was a very quick chat. They basically said that I was a great broadcaster but they weren't keeping me on," she explained.

"It was completely unexpected."

The bubbly blonde was one of the casualties of the RTE radio schedule shake-up, which saw her and former FM104 shock jock Jim Nugent both losing their slots on 2fm.

She had written on her Facebook page how she would have liked the opportunity to say a proper goodbye to all her listeners.

However, Bray-born Nikki is determined to remain positive and upbeat about the future.

"Life goes on and I'll find something else. I'm down but I'm not out.

"That's just the way things go sometimes and I know I'm going to be fine," she continued.

Nikki got a major boost over the weekend after Westlife paid tribute to her in an intimate gig in the O2 arena attended by just 1,000 fans and streamed over the internet.

She was over the moon after the dedicated Flying Without Wings to her during the acoustic set, after which she rubbed shoulders with the band at the aftershow party in the Indigo Lounge.

Although nothing has been confirmed yet in terms of her next move, it's understood that she could be lined up for a new gig on either FM104 or Dublin station 98FM.

Move

Prior to moving to RTE, she worked with Spin 1038, but left in 2003 to become one of the 2fm's biggest-name broadcasters.

She has now been taken on the books of celebrity agent Joanne Byrne as she plans her next move.

A new Facebook page has also been set up entitled 'Keep Nikki Hayes on 2fm', which has almost 1,000 members already.

The site description reads: "RTE 2fm have changed the line-up of their broadcasters and Nikki Hayes has been disgracefully left out of the new schedule -- 2fm won't be the same without Nikki!"
