Look what Louis missed, he rejected internet singing sensation Dervla
A TEENAGE singer who has become an internet sensation was turned down by Louis Walsh when she auditioned for his new girl band.
Dervla Burke of the family band Crystal Swing, has taken the internet by storm -- 18 months after the celebrity music promoter told her she didn't make the grade for his still-to-be-named group.
The trio -- including Dervla (17), her brother Derek (18) and mother Mary -- have got huge attention for their rendition on YouTube of an old Country and Western song that has attracted a massive 80,000 hits in just a week.
But the Middleton schoolgirl was overlooked for Louis Walsh and Kian Egan of Westlife's new fivesome. Dervla is not the first unsuccessful applicant whose career has taken a turn for the better despite being unsuccessful at the 2008 auditions.
Model and singer Michele McGrath revealed last week that missing out on a slot in the band had been a blessing in disguise because she ended up supporting chart-toppers JLS at the O2. The 23-year-old claimed that being pipped to the post by former You're A Star songstress Sharon Condon drove her to work harder.
Dervla and Crystal Swing's internet success comes despite the fact that they have only played private functions, booked for one of their three "packages" which consist of a wedding show, a party show and "social dancing".
They have two CDs of cover versions out, The Best Years of Our Lives and Sweet Dreams .
They have admitted they were "flabbergasted" by the response to the YouTube video of the song He Drinks Tequila.
Crystal Swing have received requests for interviews not just from all over Ireland, but from the US, the UK and even from as far away as China.
Louis Walsh and Kian Egan's co-managed band were hailed as the Irish answer to Girls Aloud and received huge amounts of publicity when the lineup was chosen -- but they have yet to be named or release a song. A launch is planned for this summer -- nearly two years after the lineup was finalised.
Kian is now preparing the girls -- Kasey Smith (20,) Corinna Dunne (23), Sharon Condon (24), Leigh Learmont (19) and 26-year-old Jodi -- for the release of their debut single and video.
The launch will clash with the planned release of a new album by Walsh's Girls Aloud protege, Nadine Coyle.
The promoter has told pals the showdown will be "healthy competition".
