Eurosong final on Late Late Show

The Eurosong Final will be aired live on the Late Late Show next spring.

The six best entries looking to go forward to next year's Eurovision in Moscow will compete in a live show in late February or early March.

Last year, the Eurosong was hosted by Ray D'Arcy, live from the University Concert Hall Limerick and caused controversy after Dustin the Turkey was voted the winner.

Eurovision hopefuls for Moscow 2009, however, are zealously submitting their songs to RTE, which the broadcaster said will be less political than in other years.

Jury voting will be re-introduced to the music competition, so Ireland's entrant won't have to compete against the friendships of eastern European countries and so-called "neighbour voting", it is hoped.

Talent

Ireland's Eurovision sob stories may now be a thing of the past, as the contest will return to its focus on talent rather than popularity.

A spokesperson for RTE says the European Broadcasting Union is hoping that by reducing the influence of diaspora and neighbour voting, the song contest won't receive the criticism as has happened in other years.

These national juries will have the same voting power as the people's vote, the televote.

Eddie Doyle, head of entertainment at RTE, says: "We hope that the decision by the European Broadcasting Union will encourage songwriters and performers to come forward this year.

"Eurosong 2009 is an opportunity for them to showcase their talent, to perform on the Late Late Show and ultimately to represent Ireland in front of a huge television audience across Europe.

Songs

"We hope to get lots of entries and to give the public six cracking songs to choose from to represent them in Moscow in May."

While RTE is remaining tight-lipped as to who this year's possible Eurosong entrants and judges will be, the spokesperson says the judging panel will once again include experts from the worlds of music, entertainment and television.
