Cellulite is much talked about but little understood. Brenda McCormick tries to peel away the myths about dimpled flesh
There are a lot of myths and rumours around cellulite but, according to Daniela Chandler, Director of Pevonia UK, cellulite can affect men and women of any body size, weight or body structure.
She says: "Puffy appearance, dimpled skin, uneven texture and poor circulation are all the tell-tale signs of cellulite and will vary in severity from one person to another depending on the factors affecting the cellulite."
These contributing factors include poor diet, low levels of activity (which slows down the metabolism and circulation) and free-radical damage. Free radicals, Chandler explains, are found in the air around us and will damage our skin cells and their immunity.
Women's hormone levels can also intensify the appearance of cellulite as high levels of oestrogen can cause the fat cells to enlarge causing water retention and lack of product usage.
However there are a number of things you can do to help improve the appearance of cellulite. Getting more active will improve circulation and upping your water intake will also help. Chandler advises staying hydrated as this helps with the circulation and rids the body of toxins. "We [at Pevonia] suggest drinking room-temperature water or water flavoured with cucumber and mint or lemon," she says.
It's also worth remembering that
alcohol, caffeine and spicy foods can all contribute to the formation of cellulite. Switching to a healthy diet will improve circulation, energy and skin radiance and will reduce the appearance of cellulite.
In salons, Pevonia has pioneered the use of the green coffee-bean extract within a body wrap to treat cellulite. This ingredient was chosen based on research indicating that it was an inhibitor of free-radical formation and was capable of improving microcirculation, detoxifying, increasing diuresis and breaking down fat.
Two home treatments, Smooth & Tone Body-Svelt Gel €68.25 and Smooth & Tone Body-Svelt Cream €68.25 (these prices are applicable from next month) are also available.
