Carney is the former bassist for rock band The Frames and directed the band in their music videos before he directed Once.
The storyline of Once has gone on to be transformed for the stage and received eight Tony Awards earlier this month.
On the back of Once's success, Carney was able work on Zonad, released in March 2010.And already Carney has secured more A-list talent for this latest project.
James Corden has come on board after his Tony Award win earlier this month.
Corden first burst onto the scene with low-budget comedy Gavin And Stacey.
He has become a staple on British television but is breaking into the wider US market with this venture.
Mark Ruffalo is also on board, and Maroon 5 singer Adam Levine makes his big-screen debut.
Keira Knightley takes up the lead role as an aspiring musician who moves to New York with her boyfriend, only to be dumped when he makes it solo in the industry before she does.
Levine's character breaks up with Knightley soon after their arrival in the States.
Shooting is scheduled to begin in New York next month.
