COLIN Farrell will play a shady police officer whose loyalties are divided between his fellow cops and the mob in season two of True Detective.

HBO finally put a stop to the casting rumours - days after Farrell confirmed that he had nabbed a role - and revealed that Dodgeball actor Vince Vaughn will be his co-star.

Farrell's character, Ray Velcoro, is torn between his masters in a corrupt police department and the mob bosses who own him according to those behind the drama.

Vaughn will appear as a career criminal in the new series, which is set in the environs of LA.

His character, Frank Semyon, tries to move into a more legitimate circle but is in fear of losing his ill-gotten empire when his business partner is murdered.

No other cast members have been confirmed yet, though it is understood that at least one of the detectives will be a woman.

Woody Harrelson and Mathew McConaughey starred in the debut season of the dark drama.

Eight hour-long episodes will make up the show this time around.

The opening two episodes will be directed by Justin Lin who is best known for the Fast and Furious films.

In a daring move the masterminds behind the breakthrough hit decided that the cast and story-line would get a complete overhaul ahead of season two.
