RUGBY star Brian O’Driscoll and pop sensation Niall Horan enjoyed a round of golf together ahead of the three-day 1D mayhem in Croke Park.

The famous friends teed-off in the exclusive golf resort, the K Club, yesterday afternoon sharing the same golf car.

While the Mullingar star (20) faces the greatest homecoming of all time to a sold-out stretch of three nights in Croke Park, O’Driscoll (35) is coming to the end of his career with just over a week to his last professional game of rugby - but neither star showed any sign of stress yesterday afternoon.

Niall was dressed in the appropriate golf attire, opting for chinos over his usual ripped jeans, hoodies and leather jackets.

And his trademark stand-up hair was nowhere to be seen on the greens in Kildare with his locks sitting flat on his head without a drop of gel.

Fans queued up outside the Kildare resort but were kept back by security as the pair had a relaxing the afternoon.

Onlookers said the two stars, “chatted and laughed away without a care in the world on the course”.

At one point, the former Irish rugby player hit his ball into the rough but was not too worried about the sporting mishap.

The pair hit it off last year when sports-mad Niall rallied to the former Irish captain’s side when Lions coach Warren Gatland dropped him for the final game of the Lions tour.

He also went to the Leinster player’s testimonial dinner in London last year.

Niall’s trip to the golf club without his band was planned to give him some time out of his busy schedule while on home soil.

The One Direction star said his return home was going to be the “best weekend of his life”.

Aside from coming home last Christmas, where he asked his fans for privacy, he was home just before then for his nephew and godson Theo’s christening.

The small family affair in Mullingar was swamped with photographers but only a handful of fans as the 20-year-old star was escorted in and out of the small church by his minder last November.

He underwent surgery on his knee just after Christmas which had been causing him trouble for a number of years.

Even though he kept quiet about it beforehand he tweeted lots of snaps of his recovering knee post-op.

The busy pop star, who found fame on X Factor more than three years ago is reported to be worth €17m and now has more than 18m followers on Twitter.

Around 250,00 fans are expected to descend on the capital over the weekend for the three concerts, with rigid traffic cordons in place to deal with the crowds.

The band has just flown in from Central and South America and will head to the UK next.
