West side wonders

A sell-out performance of West Side Story has been a huge musical success at Ratoath College.

Almost 2,000 people attended the performances over four nights.

"It was a total team effort by students and staff. The students went home every night on a real high," said John McCarthy, who co-directed the show with fellow teacher Aisling Savage -- while musical director was teacher Dearbhla Garrett.

Some 70 pupils from non-exam years made up the cast and 30 more pupils played significant backstage roles.

The lead female role of Maria was played by first year student Alannah Webb (13), who had "an amazing voice", while the lead male role of Tony was played by second year Enda Cahill (14).
