Voice host Eoghan takes a pop at the 'sneery' X Factor

TV HOST Eoghan McDermott has wasted no time finding his voice to hit out at the "sneery" X Factor.

RTE's new golden boy hopes to rival the British talent show with The Voice of Ireland but says they are very different programmes.

The Xfm presenter (28), who will co-host The Voice with Kathryn Thomas, believes Louis Walsh and co are only interested in making fools out of The X Factor's contestants.

"You get no joy in seeing those people getting ridiculed, it's just not a happy vibe," he told the Herald.

"They make such a big deal out of the people who aren't up to par at the start and it's just to laugh at them.

"But it's not a good feeling to sit there and laugh at people. I don't think anyone really revels in that and it's TV entertainment only for the sake of it."

Encouraging

The Dublin presenter, who also worked on TG4's Pop4, added: "On X Factor, you have the judges and then contestants are sent to musical mentors whereas with this [The Voice], the judges will be the ones advising them as well, so I just think the vibe will be nicer and more proactively encouraging people."

The talent show, which sees contestants performing 'blind' auditions where the four judges can't see them, will go into production next October, with plans to air it early in the New Year. A panel of four celebrity mentors will whittle down the aspiring singers down to a handful of finalists, who will then sing against each other for the overall prize, a recording contract with Universal Music.

Knocklyon native Eoghan also admitted he was gobsmacked to land the hosting job, given how much competition there was for the role.

"Everyone has asked me that and it's genuinely not faux humility because I did have the lowest profile out of everybody that I heard auditioned," he added.
