Net bullies take swipe over charity single

INTERNET bullies have attacked Mary Byrne (51) for supporting a controversial charity single for British soldiers.

The Herald can reveal how the Ballyfermot mum has been subjected to a string of negative comments for being involved with the X Factor single.

A cover of the David Bowie hit Heroes, the cash raised is going towards Help4Heroes, a charity for British troops.

However Mary, who's singing U2's With Or Without You for the next rock-themed show, has been subjected to a torrent of criticism after putting a post up on her Facebook, urging her fans to buy the new single.

It comes after she and One Direction's Niall Horan performed on stage wearing poppies.

One poster wrote: "I'm pretty shocked at an Irish working-class women standing up there, supporting British troops, to be perfectly honest, I can't believe it."

Another critic said: "This family entertainment show has been hijacked by those who are trying to paint the British security forces of being victims of a war which is of their own making."

Yet Mary's fans have rallied to defend her, saying she is only doing what the X Factor bosses are asking.

The single is now being tipped as a Christmas number one.
