Morah shuns the spotlight as children pick up award for Gerry

Morah Ryan shunned the limelight on Saturday night when her late husband Gerry received a posthumous award for his contribution of over 30 years to Irish radio.

Morah, who turned 51 last month, was invited to attend the 36th annual People of the Year Awards at the exclusive Citywest hotel.

But she chose instead to allow her two eldest children Lottie (24) and Rex (20) to collect the award on behalf of their beloved father.

The Herald can reveal how the mum of five opted to mark the occasion by watching the live broadcast on RTE at home alongside a group of close pals, including Dave Fanning's wife Ursula.

Gerry's longtime friend and fellow RTE star Dave was in attendance to present the award to the star's two children and claimed it still hadn't sunk in that the iconic broadcaster is gone for good.

"Everyone was asking me if I was feeling emotional getting up on stage but I can't say I was because it all still feels like a dream to me," he explained. "I keep thinking he's just away on his summer holidays and he'll be back any day now. "

Dave, who spent six months living in Gerry and Morah's Clontarf home along with his wife and two children in 1995, went on to reveal how he thinks Ryan Tubridy is the ideal person to step into his late friend's shoes on 2FM.

He said: "I think he's doing a great job. It's not an easy gig and I certainly don't envy him it but he's definitely already proven himself."

Dave also paid tribute to Lottie and Rex, for their brave words on stage whilst collecting their Dad's award.

Dressed in a short, glittering silver dress, Lottie made an emotional speech as she collected the gong.

"For Dad, broadcasting was just so much more than a job to him," she said. "It truly was his absolute passion in life. He was such a compassionate person. He was such a generous soul, who added so much inspiration and excitement to our lives.

"Tonight we've chosen to celebrate and be happy for what he has achieved."

Rex also paid tribute and joked: "I'm sure he's up there bragging to all the lads on how he's blagged another award in true Gerry fashion."
