Mel and Dermot had show lined up
COMEDIAN Mel Smith was pencilled in to appear with Dermot Morgan in his first follow-up to Father Ted.
Smith, who passed away last Friday, read for a role in a sitcom penned by Morgan before his death in 1998.
The comedy – called Re-united – followed the lives of two retired footballers sharing a flat in London.
Dermot Morgan's former manager John Fischer said the comedy duo had planned to go into partnership on the show.
"Dermot was going to play an Eamon Dunphy-type who had gone on to do journalism after soccer, but who had ended up living with an old football pal," he told the Herald.
"I can remember them doing a reading and their personalities hitting it off."
However, just weeks later, Morgan (45) collapsed on February 28, 1998, after a massive heart attack.
