Illusionist Keith Barry's wife gives birth to their first child
There's a little bit of magic in Keith Barry's household today after the arrival of his new baby girl. The celebrity magician's wife Mairead gave birth to their first child, a daughter yesterday.
Keith was looking forward to his new role as dad and said that he was going to get stuck in with everything.
"I'm going to learn to change nappies as I go along. I'm going to wing it," the relaxed magician said.
Earlier this week Keith said that he was sticking to reading magic books rather than swotting up on being a dad.
"I'm as ready as I can be. A lot of guys read baby books from cover to cover. But I'm lying down reading a magic book."
Keith reported that he was not feeling nervous last week but that he would be when they got into the hospital.
"I'm not a hard man," he said. "When she is in the hospital huffing and puffing I probably will be (nervous)."
Keith and Mairead met when they were in college in Galway. The pair dated for 10 years before they eventually tied the knot two years ago.
The magician said that his near-death experience last year meant that he reassessed his life. He was in a car accident in the North in March and said that the accident forced the issue of children in his mind.
"After the accident, I got to thinking, what would I have done differently? And the only thing I would have changed in my life was to have a baby and here we are, a year later and my wife Mairead is due in August or September," he explained earlier on in the year.
The zany magician has just completed a sold-out tour of his live show in Ireland and his next shows will be in September as part of the Bulmers' Comedy Festival.
Keith's career in the USA is also going from strength to strength and in October he is opening his own show in Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas for a 10-week run.
