Irish couple hope to be the Biggest Losers

MEET the Irish couple are aiming to win the battle of the bulge in front of millions of viewers on a radical weight-loss show.

Paula Culhane (31) and Gerard Burke (24), who collectively weigh 38 stone 7lbs, are among seven couples on the new series of ITV's The Biggest Loser.

And they have admitted that the hope of walking down the aisle together some day as slimmer versions of themselves is their primary motivation for signing up for the show, fronted by Davina McCall.

Teaching assistant Paula, who weighs 18st 9lbs, says she's dreading the gruelling exercise regime that lies ahead, fearing it's going to be "horrendous".

"The Biggest Loser is actually the best place to lose weight, the motivation, support, information that you get in the house, although I'm worried about how unfit I really am -- I'm dreading the first training session," the Limerick woman said.

Her boyfriend Gerard, who's unemployed and weighs in at 19st 12lbs, has revealed that he previously lost four stone and has been trying to shed more pounds.

"I'd like to think that one day I'll start a family and get married and I'd like to be thinner when I do," he said.

But they're not the only Irish people on the programme -- they're joined on it by Dubliner Damien Byrne (21), an aspiring DJ who weighs 25st 7lbs.

"This is going to be a big kick start for me, to teach me the right way to do it properly," he said.

The seven couples have all moved into The Biggest Loser house where they are filmed 24/7. For eight weeks they will live together and face intense physical and mental challenges in a battle to lose weight.
