I'm just back from Egypt...but I'm sorry I missed protests, says Anne
RTE news anchor Anne Doyle has revealed how she narrowly avoided being caught up in the ongoing chaos in Egypt.
The glamorous Montrose broadcaster explained how she had just returned home from a holiday in popular Egyptian resort Sharm El Sheikh when civil unrest broke out in Cairo.
However, Anne admits that the journalist inside her was slightly disappointed to have missed out on the opportunity to cover the violent protests, which continue in the city after three weeks, as protestors attempt to oust President Hosni Mubarak from power.
"I'm just back from there. We barely missed it all. I actually say that with a certain amount of regret," she explained. "My travelling companion Mary, she said to me 'We could have gone down to Cairo and worked'.
"We made it home without any hassle thankfully, we were just literally home when it all started. Tunisia was in trouble when we were there and I said to Mary, 'God what are the chances of this spreading over here to Egypt?'
"Who knew it was about to happen that very week.
"We had a great time over there I must say. I might go back and I'll go up to Cairo the next time and see the pyramids," she added.
The popular RTE star admits it was a well needed break for her given that she is now facing into a hectic few weeks ahead of the forthcoming election.
The star is hoping to find time to attend next month's much anticipated Peter Mark VIP Style Awards however, where she has been nominated in the category of Most Stylish Woman.
Anne will go head to head with the likes of Amy Huberman, Rosanna Davison, Glenda Gilson and Grainne Seoige for the coveted title.
The chatty blonde was speaking last night at the Grand Canal Theatre, where she stepped out to attend the opening evening of acclaimed production Calendar Girls.
The glamorous newscaster was accompanied by her partner Dan McGrattan and explained how she was enjoying a day off from her post at RTE, where she usually anchors the 9pm news bulletin.
