Gerry teased me for wearing ties on radio -- Marty
PRESENTER Marty Whelan has told how his late pal Gerry Ryan teased him about wearing a suit and tie in the RTE radio studio.
The veteran broadcaster revealed to the Herald that his good pal and colleague Gerry would poke fun at him for dressing up to go to work.
"Gerry used to slag me, saying I was the only person he knew to wear a tie into the radio studio," admitted the Lyric FM host, who has been nominated for a VIP Style award.
Carlow-native Marty, who is up against the likes of Craig Doyle, Niall Breslin and Westlifer Nicky Byrne for the title of Ireland's Most Stylish Man of 2012, divulged he has always prided himself on looking and dressing well and enjoys putting on a "good, classic suit".
"I like suits and I enjoy wearing them casually.
"I feel comfortable in them, rather than in a jumper and jeans," he said.
The former Open House anchor has been given the nod for the upcoming award ceremony, due to take place on March 23 in the Shelbourne Hotel, and insisted he's not worried about being outshone for the "young fellas" on the night.
"It doesn't bother me at all that I'm the oldest nominee in the category.
"I take it as a compliment -- I like classic fashion.
"I wouldn't go out looking like mutton dressed as lamb, a Paul Smith suit that someone in their thirties would wear would look wrong on me.
"There are some trendy young fellas up for the award, but you can't beat experience," he laughed.
